Artist Profile: Sarah Nakisanze

Sarah Nakisanze works in fiber, particularly bark cloth, to create fabric patterns based on traditional Ugandan motifs. She is also a fashion designer. She has a distinguished career in the fashion world in Africa and teaches at the Margaret Trowel School, of Fine and Industrial Art, Makerere University. Her thesis for her Master’s of Art in Fine Arts degree at Makerere University was titled “An Investigation into the Construction of a Ugandan Fashion Identity.” She is also an activist and facilitates workshops on rural craft practice and HIV/AIDS awareness. Her fabric and fashion designs have been widely exhibited throughout Africa in Uganda, South Africa, and Kenya. Her designs have also been shown in England. Continue reading

Artist Profile: Mercy Moyo

Mercy Moyo has exhibited at the National Gallery of Art, Zimbabwe many times. In addition, her work has been included in shows in the Czech Republic, Finland, South Africa, and the United States. She is the first woman artist to win the National Arts Merit Award for two-dimensional work in Zimbabwe and has received a number of residencies. She studied at the Peter Birch School of Art and Design and the National Gallery of Zimbabwe Visual Art Studios. Continue reading

Artist Profile: Lilian Nabulime

Lilian Mary Nabulime has PhD from Newcastle University, UK. Her dissertation was titled “The Role of Sculptural Forms as a Communication Tool in Relation to the Lives and Experiences of Women with HIV/AIDS in Uganda”. Her earlier degrees
including a Master’s in Art are from Makerere University. She has received a number of awards including a British Academy Fellowship, Royal Overseas League Travel Fellowship, and a Commonwealth Scholarship. Recent exhibitions include Sculptural Expressions: Women and HIV-AIDS, Makarere University; Women and AIDS, at several venues in Norway; Glasgow School of Art; international exhibitions in Algeria, Denmark, and the United States. Artist Profile: Rita Edopu

Rita Edopu from Uganda holds a number of degrees from Makerere University where she is presently pursuing a PhD program in addition to her Masters in Painting, and her degrees in pedagogy, counseling and technology. In addition she has attended postgraduate courses in Sheffield, England. She has exhibited her work widely including venues in Uganda, South Africa, Kenya, and in the United States – New Jersey, Maryland, Rhode Island, Georgia and at various institutions such as Brown University’s List Gallery and Bowie State University. She is a lecturer at Margaret Trowell School of Industrial and Fine Arts, Makerere University. Continue reading
